How we score AI companion apps
Short answer: each app gets a 0–10 score built from five categories. Every point comes from something the app publishes — its pricing page, terms of service, privacy policy or app-store listing. We don't test apps hands-on, we don't accept payment for placement, and whether an app has an affiliate program has no effect on its score.
| Category | Weight | What it asks |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing & value | 25% | Can you see the price before signing up? How much is free? What does the cheapest plan cost? Is there a refund policy? |
| Privacy & data control | 25% | Are your chats used to train AI? Can you opt out? Can you delete your data? Does the policy say how long chats are kept and who receives them? |
| Memory & continuity | 20% | Does the app say it remembers past conversations? Can you see or edit what it remembers? |
| Content policy clarity | 15% | Are the rules on adult content written down clearly? Does the app check that users are adults? |
| Features & platforms | 15% | Web, iOS and Android availability; voice; custom characters; group chats. |
How are points awarded in each category?
Each category is scored out of 10, then weighted. When a public source doesn't answer a question, the answer earns few or no points — we don't guess in an app's favour or against it.
- Pricing & value: prices visible without an account 3; free tier generous 3 or limited 2; cheapest monthly plan up to $10 earns 2, up to $15 earns 1.5, up to $25 earns 1, above that 0.5; refunds offered 2 or limited 1.
- Privacy & data control: chats not used for training 4, used with an opt-out 3, not stated 1; self-service deletion 3 or deletion on request 2; a stated retention period 1.5; sharing limited to service providers 1.5, not stated 0.5.
- Memory & continuity: long-term memory 6 (not stated 2); memory you can view or edit 4 (not stated 1).
- Content policy clarity: a clearly stated adult-content rule 5 (unclear 1); age checked by ID or a third party 5, self-declared age 2.
- Features & platforms: 2 for each of web, iOS and Android; voice 1.5; custom characters 1.5; group chats 1. We deliberately give no points for image generation.
Why does age verification raise a score?
This site is for adults. An app that checks its users are adults is doing what it should, so a real age check earns points and a missing one doesn't.
When is an app shown without a score?
If an app's public pages answer fewer than 60% of the questions above, we list it as "n/a" rather than score it on guesses. It gets a score once enough information is public.
How often are scores updated?
We re-check pricing pages and policies every month. Each app page shows its sources and the date they were checked, and lists what we couldn't confirm.
What doesn't a score tell you?
How good the conversations feel. That depends on taste and changes with every model update, and we don't claim to measure it. Use the score to compare what each app promises on price, privacy and rules — then try a free tier yourself.
For adults 18+. Scores are computed from public information with the method above; apps were not tested by us.
